Brugg Vocational and Further Education Center (BWZ)
The Brugg Vocational and Further Education Center is a future-oriented vocational school in Brugg. In a modern learning environment, more than 700 students are trained for careers in nature and technology. The curriculum covers two very different professional fields: "Energy and Data Distribution" and "Designing, Maintaining, and Managing Nature." Additionally, there is a wide range of general education courses in the areas of "Society" and "Language and Communication."
Challenges
The BWZ recognized early on the educational potential unlocked by AI for modern, adaptive teaching, as well as the importance of engaging digital learning tools that allow students to review and practice content independently. The BWZ was actively looking for a campus-wide solution that could be implemented across the board. The following challenges were identified:
Heterogeneous teaching across very different departments
The BWZ offers very different vocational fields, from training in technical professions to floristry. To cover all these areas, the BWZ needed a cross-disciplinary learning tool that could accurately reflect the specific course content.
High barrier to entry for many learning tools
As in all educational institutions, the IT affinity of teachers at BWZ Brugg varies widely. Not every teacher can be expected to quickly learn a complex new tool. Nevertheless, the BWZ was looking for a solution that would deliver results quickly.
Heterogeneous teaching across very different departments
The BWZ offers very different vocational fields, from training in technical professions to floristry. To cover all these areas, the BWZ needed a cross-disciplinary learning tool that could accurately reflect the specific course content.
"It was important that the learning tool quickly provided added value and could be easily used by all our teachers."
Student expectations
To be used by students, the learning tool had to meet the demands of young people. This includes the ability to learn on a mobile phone. At the same time, the operation must be intuitive, as the TikTok generation has little patience for cumbersome and overly complicated applications.
Complex learning content and extensive exam material
The desired learning tool had to be usable alongside classroom instruction and clearly represent existing learning material, but also offer the possibility of systematic exam preparation. This was important, for example, in the field of general education, where the content of four school years is examined in the qualification procedure.
"After four years, there is a qualification procedure in general education. There is a lot of material to review."
How does Brian help overcome these challenges?
After a systematic evaluation phase in which various tools were assessed, BWZ Brugg chose Brian. Why?
Cross-disciplinary teaching with your own materials
Brian works in all subject areas, despite the wide range of teaching at the BWZ. Since the system is based around teachers’ own teaching materials and lesson plans and exercises can be designed very flexibly, Brian is suitable for both acquiring and testing specialized knowledge as well as for competency-based teaching.
"Brian works for all our departments, including our electrical professions, the 'Designing, Maintaining, and Managing Nature' professional field, and our general education subjects."
Brian was up and running very quickly
In just 6 weeks with Brian...
- General Education 01 ‘Entering professional life’ with 14 students, 1188 answers
- Electronics Technology-EFT with 20 students, 1136 answers
- Botany with 32 students, 1698 answers
- Federal Diploma of VET with 27 students, 1583 answers
- General Education N24 with 11 students, 1166 answers
Brian's interface is intuitive and very simply designed. This allows teachers who are not software experts to quickly create content. Since Brian operates across disciplines, all teachers were able to create their first courses based on their own teaching materials in a single onboarding workshop.
Brian is intelligible and attractive to students
Brian's design is user-friendly and can be used on a laptop, tablet, or mobile phone – exactly where students spend a lot of their time. This allows them to learn on the train or bus and switch flexibly between different devices.
"Brian speaks our students' language."
Brian can handle complex material and exams
The mix of AI dialogues and learning quizzes creates an interconnected learning world that can represent both the range of the learning material and its complexity at various taxonomy levels. This results in a multi-layered tool that effectively prepares students for exams.
"The AI dialogues allow for freer practice of the learning material."
